About MASI

Masi is a grassroots initiative shaped by hundreds of interviews, community consultations, and participatory workshops, bringing together world leaders and grassroots voices. Through arts and culture, Masi unites people across differences, reimagines who gets to lead, and amplifies community stories to inspire lasting narrative change. At its heart is a commitment to dismantling systems of social and digital violence affecting low-income, gender-diverse, and immigrant communities, especially people navigating these intersecting experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why MASI?

Across South Asian cultures, Masi refers to a maternal aunt: a figure who can hold, protect, challenge, celebrate, and care for you beyond the boundaries of the immediate household.

MASI asks what becomes possible when immigrant, queer, trans, working-class, artistic, cultural, and civic communities don’t simply ask for inclusion in existing systems, but gather to imagine something different.

Who is MASI for?

MASI is for everyone who wants to celebrate culture, connect across differences, and imagine a more welcoming future. Rooted in queer, trans, immigrant, and South Asian experiences, this gathering warmly welcomes allies, friends, families, neighbors, and anyone curious to join.

You don’t need to share a particular identity or know all the right words. Come with an open mind, respect for others, and a willingness to listen, learn, and celebrate. Bring a friend; there’s a place for you here.

What will happen at MASI?

Expect an evening of live performances, music, storytelling, visual art, immigrant narratives, queer and trans cultural celebration, civic reflection, and moments of collective joy. MASI brings spectacle and substance together: you may come for the performances, but we hope you leave thinking differently about leadership, belonging, and who gets to shape our collective future.

What makes MASI different from a traditional festival?

MASI is not simply a performance showcase. Every part of the gathering is connected to a larger question: Who gets to lead, who gets remembered, and whose stories are treated as worthy of public space?

Artists, organizers, cultural workers, and community leaders come together not only to entertain, but to share lived experiences and invite audiences into a broader conversation about power, belonging, healing, and collective possibility.

Why is MASI taking place at Boston City Hall Plaza?

City Hall Plaza is a civic space associated with public life, government, and institutional power. Bringing underrepresented voices into that space is intentional. MASI transforms the plaza into a place of performance, celebration, storytelling, and collective imagination.
